The Rebels Motorcycle Club has been trying to gain a foothold in New Zealand since the start of this year and police, who have been trying to stop them, believe up to 100 of them may be headed for Canterbury.
Detective Sergeant Kevin Holder told The Press the gang had been trying to book accommodation in the city but had been turned down.
"The Rebels are a fairly new group to New Zealand and appear to be trying to establish themselves and as police officers we're doing our best to ensure that doesn't happen," Det Sgt Holder said.
He said the gang already had a small presence in Christchurch.
The Rebels are regarded as major players in the Australian crime scene, especially in the supply of drugs.
Several raids have been held in New Zealand, mainly in the North Island, on properties linked to the gang and Australian members have been prevented from entering the country.
Police believe the Rebels have been expanding their operation into New Zealand and assimilating with other gangs with common interests
